Buchanan commits to another year

Striker and top goalscorer Liam Buchanan has put pen to paper and signed a one year contract extension, keeping him at Shielfield Park until the end of the 2023/24 season.

The thirty-seven year old arrived at Berwick Rangers with two decades of SPFL experience and an incredible goalscoring pedigree, netting over 190 times in spells at the likes of Partick Thistle, Dunfermline Athletic, Raith Rovers and Alloa Athletic. He has carried on demonstrating his talent for finding the back of the net this season, much to the delight of the Wee Gers faithful. Buchanan has netted 15 goals in all competitions, all of them coming in his last 21 Berwick matches. This has included game-winning goals against Edinburgh University, Tranent Juniors – and most memorably at the death against Liam’s former club, Cowdenbeath.

Speaking after signing his contract, Buchanan said, ‘When the manager came to me asking if I would sign for another year, it was an easy decision. I’m enjoying being at Berwick, I’m scoring goals, and I feel that as a club and a team we are heading in the right direction. There is a really good feel around the place right now, and I am looking forward to next season already!’

Manager Stuart Malcolm also had high praise for Buchanan when he spoke to us after Saturday’s 1-0 win against Cumbernauld Colts. ‘Liam has already scored 15 goals this season, but he gives us so much more than that. His link up play, his experience, the way he pushes his teammate from behind the scenes – all of these are important aspects to Liam’s game. He is a leader in the same way as the likes of Michael Travis and Jamie Stevenson. Liam is experienced and knows what it takes to win games. We’re seeing it come to fruition now and we want to build on this and end the season strong.’

Liam Buchanan and the rest of his Berwick teammates are next in action on Saturday away to Gretna 2008, with their next game at Shielfield Park the following Saturday, 18th February with a 3pm kickoff, against Open Goal Broomhill.
