Ex-striker Hawke named Chairman of Community Foundation

Former ‘Gers striker Warren Hawke has been named as the inaugural Chairman of the Berwick Rangers Community Foundation.

The 49-year-old, who was a prolific goalscorer in his two seasons at Shielfield Park from 1993 to 1995, brings to this role fantastic experience of successfully establishing and leading similar organisations, including the award-winning Greenock Morton Community Foundation.

Joining Hawke on the Board of Trustees is George Mathison, a recently retired banker and change management professional, who was educated at Horncliffe Primary – where he started supporting Berwick Rangers – and Berwick High School and has spent a lot of his spare time in the last 20 years supporting his local communities in Edinburgh in a diverse range of ways.

Making up the initial trio of Trustees is Sharon Buglass, a born and bred Berwicker who has been an avid advocate of football in the local area for many years and has a working background in community education and developing working partnerships.

Speaking about assuming the role as Chairman of the Berwick Rangers Community Foundation, Hawke – who is also currently working with the SFA on a grassroots club mentoring programme, said:

“It’s great to be back and I’m very proud to be involved with the Community Foundation. Berwick was the club that reignited my love for football and I’ve always had a soft spot for the club and wanted to repay it for the enjoyment I had during my time there.

“The clean slate that I’ve got down here in Berwick reminds me where I was seven years ago with Greenock Morton in starting from scratch – and I want to build something that is of value to the local area and, in doing that, we’ve got to aim high.

“In five years’ time, we want to be an integral part of community activity in Northumberland and the south of Scotland. We want to have a reputation of delivering quality projects – whatever that may be. Football is bread and butter, but Sport For Change is a huge part of many foundations in both England, looking at the geography of where we’re based, we’ve got the best of both worlds.”
