McCormack to join ‘Gers

Berwick Rangers are pleased to announce that versatile defender Jamie McCormack has signed a pre-contract with the club, which will see him join Stuart Malcolm’s side once his contract with Bo’ness United ends at the culmination of the current season.

The 31 year-old played in the youth squads of both Hearts and Wigan Athletic, before beginning his senior career in the Championship with Greenock Morton. Spells at Brechin City and Stenhousemuir in the SPFL followed, before McCormack joined East Stirling in the Lowland League in 2017. Following his time at ‘Shire, he joined a BSC Glasgow side which finished second in the Lowland League in the 2018/19 season, and was an integral member of Stephen Swift’s side as they reached the Scottish Cup fifth round in the 2019/20 season. McCormack joined Bo’ness United at the start of the 2021/22 season, and has been a stand-out player at Newtown Park in the last 2 years.

Speaking about winning the signature of McCormack, it was clear that the defender had been on Stuart Malcolm’s radar for some time. The ‘Gers manager said, ‘I’ve known Jamie for a long time – I’m very good friends with his family and his two cousins, Gary and Steven Caldwell. I then played with Jamie at Stenhousemuir, and I’ve been trying to get Jamie to Berwick for the past two seasons.’

Speaking about what McCormack will offer the team, Malcolm added, ‘Jamie can play as a full-back and a centre-back, or as a defensive midfielder. He has played at an elite level with Wigan in the Premier League. He is a very good player, who is great in both boxes. He is full-blooded, excellent in possession of the ball, and is good for a goal occasionally as well. We think we have a player who is going to make our team better, and we are absolutely delighted to have got his signature. Jamie has probably been one of the top three defensive players in the Lowland League over the past few years. He has been part of a team fighting at the right end of the table before with BSC Glasgow, so overall this is a very positive signing for Berwick Rangers.’

Although McCormack will not join up with Berwick until next season, Berwick fans still have at least two opportunities to see the side in action at Shielfield Park in 2022/23 – against Spartans on Saturday 22 April and Cowdenbeath in the Lowland League Cup on Saturday 29 April. Tickets for both fixtures can now be purchased via Fanbase.
