Match Preview : Edinburgh City v Berwick Rangers – Ladbrokes League Two

Robbie Horn and his backroom staff will take charge of The ‘Gers officially for the first time this weekend as the Black & Gold make the short trip to Ainslie Park to take on Edinburgh City in a League Two fixture that kicks off at 3pm.

Myles Allan took the team for the cup defeat against Queens last Saturday so Horn has had his first full week to work with the squad.

The hosts and Manager Gary Jardine welcome the ‘Gers having already met in Edinburgh this season in the Betfred Cup, the game culminating in a 2-2 draw with Jardine’s men triumphing 4-2 in the resulting penalty shoot out.

Edinburgh City currently sit bottom of League Two with four defeats from four and losing 0-3 in their last home league game.

If any game this weekend promises goals then it should be this one as both teams shared 16 goals in the four league fixtures last season. With the most recent league encounter confirming Berwick’s survival in League Two after a 3-2 victory.

The match also pits the two leakiest defences against one another with 9 and 10 goals conceded respectively in the league so far. Horn will be looking at this area to improve in the coming months.

Berwick News

Horn has reported that the players have worked very hard in training this week and they will be looking to take that tempo and intensity into the game. Confidence is boosted by Steve Notman, Darren Lavery,  Gary Phillips and Chris McDonald all being fit with some missing the cup defeat last time out. The ‘Gers will also have Kevin Waugh and Andrew Irving available after both were ineligible last weekend.

However, Callum Donaldson and Steven Thompson could both be out as they are struggling with injuries.

Marcus Godinho, on loan from Hearts, is expected to make his league debut.

Horn also confirmed that young striker Daniel Watt has joined East Super League side Hill of Beath on loan until December.

Edinburgh City news

Gary Jardine will be hoping for a change of fortunes, having used the international break to recharge his troops following a disappointing start to the season. Edinburgh have various players that have played at a high level of football and will be looking at Saturday to turn their season around. Star striker Ashley Grimes commenting in the week that the squad expect to pick up results sooner rather than later. Grimes will be looking to add to the two goals he scored against Berwick in the aforementioned cup clash earlier this season.

Jardine will also have new loan signing from Hibernian, Andrew Blake, a highly rated young defender available for selection and in the squad.
