Berwick Rangers are delighted to confirm the first ‘new’ signings for the 2020/21 season after completing a double swoop for midfielder Kieran Somerville and defender Craig Reid.
The duo both worked with current ‘Gers boss Ian Little when he was in charge of Livingston U20s from June 2016 until September 2017, while he also linked up with Somerville during his stint with Whitehill Welfare during the 2018/19 season.
After leaving Livingston, Somerville, now 22, joined Arniston Rangers and then headed to Whitehill Welfare. One of the club’s key players, in his two seasons there – one in the Lowland League and the other in the East of Scotland Premier League – he racked up 57 appearances.
Reid, 21, meanwhile, started his career at Hibernian before moving to the youth set-up at Livingston, where he spent two years until the expiration of his youth contract in 2017.
From there, he signed for Penicuik Athletic before swiftly joining Whitehill Welfare on loan for the 2017/18 season. He made that move permanent for the 2018/19 season but, in November 2018, he switched to Tranent JFC.
He spent the remainder of the 2018/19 at Tranent and also the early stages of the 2019/20 season before signing for Newtongrange Star.
Speaking about the signings of both Somerville and Reid, Little said:
“I’m pleased to continue building our squad for the 2020/21 season with the signings of Kieran and Craig, who I’m sure will be valuable additions.
“I worked with them both when they were full-time at Livingston and, although they have ventured down a different road where they’re now both working full-time and playing part-time, both have plenty of first-team experience that can help us.
“Kieran is a powerful player who can defend but also drive forward with the ball, while his versatility means he can play across the midfield as well as up front. Craig, meanwhile, can play either centre-back or right-back and is a quick, ball-playing defender who reads the game well.”
