Match Preview: Berwick Rangers v Queen’s Park – Betfred Cup

This evening Berwick host Gus MacPherson’s Queens Park side at Shielfield Park, with John Coughlin’s side looking to secure their first win of the competitive campaign. However, if they are to do so, they must overcome an impressive Spiders side, who dispatched of Edinburgh City last time out in a convincing 3-0 victory.

As usual, fans of both the home and away side will be welcomed at the Red Lion, located a three minute walk from Berwick-upon-Tweed railway station.

Prior to the match, the club will conduct the draw to find out the winners of our kit sponsor competition.

Michael McKenna will likely miss out.

Berwick Rangers Team News:

Long-term absentees Robert Wilson and Kevin McKinlay remain out of the fold for this one, and they will probably be joined by Michael McKenna, who is unlikely to be risked after picking up a knock last time out.

Young forward Dan Watt will be available for the ‘Gers after signing a new one-year contract with the club last night. Watt netted for the club on Saturday during a 6-0 friendly victory over Linton Hotspur.

Other than the three absentees above, the manager expects to have a full side available to him.

Queen’s Park Team News:

This evening will be the first time the Spiders have challenged the Black & Gold army for the first time since March 2016, when both sides played out a 0-0 draw at Hampden Park.

Looking ahead to the game, Queen’s boss MacPherson said: “We expect a tough game at what is always a difficult venue to go and play at.

“I’m looking for us to continue the form we saw from the players on Saturday and build on that. The result is somewhat irrelevant as we continue to build for the league campaign which is now just around the corner.

“From our perspective the game isn’t ideal in terms of the travelling midweek. We will be without a couple of players but this will of course present others with the opportunity to come in and stake their claim for a place.”
