Banjo: Cameron Was A Key Factor Behind Signing

Midfielder David Banjo has admitted that player-boss Colin Cameron was a big part of the reason he wanted to join Berwick Rangers.

Midfielder Banjo joins after spells with Arbroath, Farnborough & Montrose.

The former Tottenham Hotspur youth explained: “I was really impressed with what the manager had to say. He’s clearly got big ambitions for the club. The main reason I joined Berwick is because I spoke to Colin. He told me his ambitions, and I have to say, they matched mine.

“The gaffer’s passion and enthusiasm for the game is something I love. That’s often the kind of inspiration you need as a player.

“As soon as I spoke to him (Cameron), I knew that I wanted to impress him. That’s a big part of what makes a good manager.

“But I also want to learn from him, too. He’s got a ton of experience in the game and has reached the highest levels. I’m keen to add to my game and I believe he and the other coaching staff have the ability and knowledge to better me as a player.”

One aspect of his game Banjo is particularly keen to work on is his goalscoring prowess, admitting:

“I’m really keen to add more goals to my game too. I know the manager had a decent scoring record from midfield when he was younger, so it’ll be great to take in what he has to say.”

The midfielder joins Berwick following spells with Arbroath and Montrose, but few know that between the two, David also travelled south to play Vanarama Conference football. The steely midfielder continues:

“I really enjoyed my time with Arbroath – I felt I was playing some of my best football, and in truth, I didn’t really want to leave. But back then, I had an agent who had promised me a move abroad with a full-time deal. At that time, it was too good to turn down.

“Unfortunately though it fell through, and by the time it had I’d missed the summer window and any chance to return to Gayfield. I’d actually heard that Berwick were sniffing around at that point too, so the club have always been in the back of my mind. But after missing the window, I moved south instead and spent some time with Farnborough FC.”

It wasn’t long before the pacey midfielder returned to Ladbrokes League Two though, with Banjo explaining: “In January, I returned to Scotland and ended up with Montrose. In honesty, that move for me was always more about picking up game time, improving my fitness and getting back on the radar.

“I’m pleased that I’ve found a club that I feel I can excel in again. I’m really keen to play a part in ensuring that the ambitions Colin (Cameron) spoke of are met.

“On a personal level, I’d like to think that the rough patch of last season has left me in a better place. As I’ve said, I’m want to impress the boss. I want to push myself to the limits for the team, and get back to my best.

“If a full-time club came calling again, it would be nice, I’ll admit that. But the after the whole experience of last season, I’m in no rush. I’m in a much better place, and I’m delighted to have joined. Berwick will be my priority, not a move.”
