Recognition for ‘Gers players!

The ‘Gers enjoyed a 2-0 victory over Annan Athletic on Saturday, and the efforts of two of the Black & Gold Army in particular have not gone unnoticed.

Brian Martin made it into the SPFL’s Team of the Week

Yesterday, it was announced that midfielder Michael McKenna (Home kit sponsored by SBAT, away kit available here) was awarded the Social Media Man of the Match award, which makes it’s return for the 16/17 campaign. At the end of the season, a tally of winners will be taken and the player with the most awards will win the Social Media Player of the Year award – won by Jordan McGregor last year, now of Hamilton Academical, and Paul Willis in its maiden year, now of Albion Rovers.

McKenna missed out of the ‘Gers opener against Arbroath through suspension, but the tenacious midfielder impressed fans upon his return to the line-up with an energetic and creative midfield performance which was topped off with a second-half goal, Michael showing class to time his run and get on the end of a sublime Jordyn Sheerin (Home kit sponsored by NJM Travel, away kit sponsored by Aspect Electrical) pass before bursting into the box and firing in from the floor after being hauled down.

But McKenna isn’t the only ‘Gers man to have been recognised, with the determined efforts of centre-back Brian Martin (Home kit sponsored by Graham Bell, away kit sponsored by Platinum Plumbing and Heating) being acknowledged by the SPFL as the solid defender found his way into their Team of the Week alongside former ‘Gers star Danny Swanson, amongst others.

The SPFL Team of the Week is formed of 11 players from all four Scottish senior divisions. The SPFL website described Martin’s performance:

“The centre-back made a crucial block earlier in the match and was then called on to keep the defence together after a red card was shown to his partner Jonny Fairbairn (home and away kit sponsored by Len Eyre). Thankfully for the hosts, Martin and his teammates remained resolute at the back as they saw off Annan Athletic with a 2-0 victory.”

The club would like to congratulate the pair on their achievements and look forward to seeing more of the same during this Saturday’s clash with Forfar Athletic!
