Preview: Berwick Rangers v Elgin City – SPFL Ladbrokes League Two
John Coughlin has challenged his players to go out and beat a ‘quality’ Elgin side at Shielfield Park and secure a result which he believes would ensure the team doesn’t finished bottom.
The ‘Gers currently sit nine points clear of bottom-placed East Stirlingshire and with games quickly running out, he believes a win today would preserve Scottish League Two status and allow the club to start looking towards next season.
“I’ve said this many times before, and I reiterated it to the players at training, that we must focus on ourselves and get the job done,” said Coughlin.
“But I think a win would leave a huge mountain to climb for East Stirling and one that will go a long, long way to securing our survival.”
Berwick Rangers Team News:
Brian Martin returns from his one-match suspension after handling on the goal-line in the 1-0 win over Stirling Albion two weeks ago.
Elsewhere, Allan Walker remains sidelined despite featuring for the U20s in midweek, Dwayne Coultress won’t play after completing his loan move to Newtongrange Star, while Daniel Watt is expected to continue his run in the first team squad.
Elgin City Team News:
Elgin will be at full strength for their long trip to Shielfield Park, and will be looking to apply the pressure on Clyde and East Fife after slipping to 3rd in midweek.
City have a relatively poor away record, having picked up only 14 of a possible 45 points away from Borough Briggs, but Coughlin is wary of the firepower of the likes of Craig Gunn and Dylan Easton – but hasn’t put together a specific plan to stop them.
“Teams face a huge task facing Elgin because they’ve got so many goals in them,” conceded Coughlin. “Craig Gunn has scored 22 goals this season, while Dylan Easton could play in any team in the division and probably above – I’m certain of that – and he’s probably been the difference in the two games I’ve managed against Elgin.
“We don’t have any special preparations. We’ve played them twice before, we know what to expect so it’s all down to the players now and their desire to win the football match – but I’m sure we have enough on the day to get a result.”
