New signing hopes to bring winning recipe to Berwick
Alan Cook is a ‘Ger! Berwick Rangers have added substance, quality and experience into their defence, as manager Thomas Scobbie has swooped for the left-sided defender who impressed so much as a trialist against Linlithgow Rose on Saturday.
Cook turned in a man of the match performance in Berwick’s league opener, earning both the sponsors’ award (presented by MoTM Sponsors Dawn and Danny Hartley) and the social media award for his efforts. The 32 year-old has played from the second to sixth tiers of Scottish football in a 15-year career, and was most recently at West of Scotland side Cumnock Juniors. Cook has featured most prominently for Stenhousemuir, for whom he appeared over 130 times in total. He also has Lowland League experience, having signed for Open Goal Broomhill in 2022/23.
Although Cook settled into the side immediately at training and as a trialist, one of the challenges that needed to be overcome was balancing playing for Berwick with travel and work commitments – which are particularly heavy for Cook as a Glasgow-based player. As a result, Alan has committed initially to a contract until the end of December – but to land a player of his quality for any amount of time is a real coup for the ‘Gers.
Speaking about the latest addition to his squad, ‘Gers boss Scobbie said, ‘I am delighted to get ‘Cookie’ agreed to a deal until Christmas. He is a player with vast experience in league football, and we are undoubtedly a stronger team with him as part of it. Alan is a winner, demanding high standards whole also helping the younger players in the squad to develop. I’m sure all supporters who were at the Linlithgow Rose game could see Alan’s class, and the difference he will make to us.’
