McCrystal Returns to Shielfield!

Berwick Rangers are thrilled to confirm the permanent signing of midfielder Ben McCrystal on a two-year deal, with the talented 19-year-old returning to the Black and Gold after a standout loan spell last season.

McCrystal, who first joined the ‘Gers on loan from St Johnston last campaign, quickly made himself a favourite among the MKM Shielfield Park faithful with his composed presence in midfield and tireless work ethic. Now, the former Saints man makes his stay in Berwick official — and supporters will be hoping he can continue to boss the midfield and pull the strings in 2025/26.

The move marks a homecoming of sorts for Ben, whose performances during his temporary spell helped the side to some crucial results down the stretch. Known for his eye for a pass and calmness under pressure, McCrystal’s signature is a statement of intent from manager Kevin Haynes, who is building a squad full of familiar faces and proven quality.

Speaking about his latest addition, Haynes said:

“I’m absolutely delighted to bring Ben back to the club. He showed during his loan what he’s all about — a clever player who keeps things ticking and always gives 100%. He knows the club, he knows our expectations, and I’ve no doubt he’ll kick on even further now that he’s here permanently.”

The Berwick boss was also quick to highlight the midfielder’s mentality:

“Ben’s got the right attitude on and off the park. He’s the type of player you want in the dressing room — determined, humble, and focused. It’s a big boost for us to get him in early and part of the group for preseason.”

McCrystal becomes the latest piece in the jigsaw for Haynes ahead of the new campaign, and supporters will be counting down the days until they see him pulling the strings once again at Shielfield.

Keep your eyes peeled for more squad news soon — this summer’s far from over!
