Match Preview: Berwick Rangers v Elgin City – SPFL Ladbrokes League Two
Berwick welcome a free-scoring Elgin City to Shielfield Park tomorrow afternoon, and will be hoping to cause another upset to a title-chasing side following their impressive 3-2 victory over Forfar Athletic last weekend.
Supporters of both Berwick and Elgin City will be welcomed prior to the game in the Red Lion (Berwick), a short walk from Berwick-upon-Tweed railway station. The pub will be
putting on complimentary lunch for all fans who make themselves known and purchase a drink.
Following very wet weather in the area all Thursday and rain forecast overnight Friday into Saturday am, the club will be doing an early morning pitch check. Any updates will be logged on this club web.
Berwick Rangers Team News:
Berwick are once again without defenders Jonny Fairbairn, Michael Dunlop and Robert Wilson, with the trio of centre backs ruled out with injury issues.
However, Berwick’s defence has looked more stable of late, with Pat Scullion guiding on-loan Dunfermline Athletic youngster Euan Spark through games, and Lee Hamilton and Gary Phillips impressing from the full back areas.
Berwick are also bolstered by the return to fitness of Kevin McKinlay, the experienced and versatile defender making his return from the bench to help Berwick see through their victory last time out. Elsewhere, Jordan Orru chipped in with a brace of assists for the table-topping Under 20’s in midweek, and his contribution will not have gone unnoticed after breaking through into the first-team in recent weeks.
John Coughlin may have added to his squad with the signing of David Verlaque this week, however the winger will not be available for selection as he serves the first of a two-match ban owing to the red card he picked up during his apperance against the Loons.
Elgin City Team News:
If Berwick are to beat a City side who haven’t lost in six games, they’ll have to do what so many sides have failed to do and keep the Elgin forwards quiet.
Frontman Shane Sutherland is enjoying himself this season, the division’s top scorer having already netted on occasions and picked up 11 assists – however Berwick may be handed a boost after the pacey striker was forced off with an injury last time out against Clyde, leaving him a doubt for the trip to Shielfield Park.
Berwick fans will no doubt be familiar with the names Brian Cameron & Craig Gunn, the pair boasting impressive scoring records when coming up against the Black & Gold army. Cameron has already netted 10 from midfield this season, whilst Gunn has netted 9 in 10 games against Berwick.
Elgin currently sit 3rd in League Two, however should the division’s northern-most side win their two games in hand, they’d leapfrog Arbroath into 2nd and heap the pressure on Forfar Athletic.
