Berwick Rangers first-team went down 1-0 in Al1loa in their final friendly match before the ‘Gers competitive season begins on Tuesday night in Betfred Cup action against Albion Rovers at Shielfield Park.

Isaac Layne netted the game’s only goal in the 41st minute after Graeme Holmes released Scott Taggart down the Wasps’ right flank, allowing Taggart to pull back to Layne and fire into the top corner, leaving Kevin Walker with little chance.

The home side would be grateful for the experience of Jim Goodwin, the veteran clearing a Steven Thomson effort off the line and blocking a goal-bound Darren Lavery strike over the course of the game.

The ‘Gers sent two Development Teams out to respective tournaments, finding mixed fortunes. In Rosyth, the ‘Gers suffered a 2-0 defeat to Tynecastle FC.

However in Tranent, Berwick left themselves with a chance of winning the tournament owing to a 3-2 victory over Crossgate Primrose Juniors. Goals came from a trialist and a Daniel Watt brace. Derek McKenzie will lead the side to the final this afternoon (3pm KO), whilst first-team manager John Coughlin will also be in attendance.

Finally, Berwick Rangers Colts suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of Coldstream Amateurs in their first senior game. Despite the result, officials from Coldstream told of how impressed they were with the Colts side, and weren’t shy in registering their belief that the young side would do well in the Border Amateur C league this season.
