Fairbairn scoops Man of the Match award
Club captain Jonny Fairbairn’s no-nonsense performance at the heart of the Berwick defence during Saturday’s 1-0 win over Queen’s Park has seen him run out as this week’s Social Media Man of the Match winner.
The centre-half, who picked up exactly 50% of the votes, led by example in the ‘Gers back four, a steely performance preventing the likes of an impressive Chris Duggan from netting to tie the scores.
In truth, the ‘Gers may be a little disappointed they couldn’t grab the game by the scruff of the neck when the Spiders were reduced to ten men for a deliberate handball in the penalty area, but Fairbairn showed great composure and leadership ability to ensure his and his team mates’ concentration levels remained high for the remainding 70 minutes, despite coming under heavy pressure at times.
In fact, it’d be his central defensive partner Kieran Ainslie who would finish runner-up to Jonny with 19% of votes.
Kieran was solid throughout and typically dominant in aerial duels throughout, helping to ensure any ‘Plan B’ wouldn’t come to fruition for the away team.
In third place came a late arrival in the form of Dwayne Coultress, the second-half substitute earning 13% of votes for a cameo which helped the ‘Gers relieve pressure though his calm dribbling and careful passes out on the left flank.
The remainder of the vote was split between Ross Drummond, Graeme Beveridge and Finn Graham, each of whom picked up 6%.
Ross made his first start of the season after struggling with an ankle issue, but looked as assured as ever at the back whilst also helping to get forward and support attacks.
Finn put in another tireless shift, full of prompting passes as he attempted to help the ‘Gers kill the game off.
Graeme meanwhile battled impressively in his first central midfield appearance, moving from left-back to accommodate the return of Drummond.
Well done to those who picked up votes and the whole team for a determined victory – hopefully there are many more to come!
