Dennis McCleary named Honorary Vice-President of Berwick Rangers FC

Club Secretary Dennis McCleary has been named Honorary Vice-President of Berwick Rangers Football Club during what is his 50th year working for the Wee Gers.

The motion was tabled by the club’s former chairman John Bell at Monday night’s AGM as he paid tribute to Dennis’ incredible dedication and professionalism in his role, as well as his passion and support of the club.

Given how highly thought of Dennis is among the club’s fellow officials and fanbase, as well as the wider Scottish football community, it came as no surprise that the motion was unanimously approved.

Speaking about being bestowed with the title of the club’s Honorary Vice-President, Dennis, who has also been and continues to be a prominent figure at our Shielfield Park neighbours Berwick Bandits Speedway, said: “I am honoured to receive this position with the club.

“Little did I think when Harry Melrose asked me to come and assist during the 1969/70 season I would still be here 50 seasons later, give or take a couple of short spells away.

“There have been plenty of ups and downs as you can imagine. Two championships stand out and a league medal in the 1978/79 season as Club Secretary.

“I think I have worked with 22 Managers. However, at the end of the day, it doesn’t matter who is Chairman, Manager or Secretary, the club comes first. Simply, there is no one bigger than the club.

“Over the years we have always tried to be professional and I think the SFA, SPFL and now Lowland League appreciate that. We have always had good relationships with them and I think they appreciate us as we do them.

“As for how long I’ll continue for, I’ve hinted at stepping down a couple of times and maybe sooner rather than later someone younger can take over the role but, whatever happens, I will always continue to back the club.”
