Cummings proud to represent Berwick
Midfielder Drew Cummings has spoken about his pride at representing the town where he lives and works, as he becomes the latest player to join the Berwick Rangers squad for next season. He arrives from neighbouring club Tweedmouth Rangers on a one-year contract.
Drew will be no stranger to Berwick’s manager Stuart Malcolm, nor to fans of the Wee ‘Gers. After impressing the coaching team in training sessions, Cummings joined Berwick on a short-term loan last season. He featured from the bench in the 3-3 draw away at Cumbernauld Colts and the 4-1 victory at The Falkirk Stadium against East Stirlingshire – both in late January. Drew provided impact from the bench in both games in a central midfield role, including helping to set up a goal for Graham Taylor with his first touch against East Stirling. The return of competitive fixtures for Tweedmouth led to Drew being recalled to his parent club, but he now makes the short journey down Shielfield Terrace for next season.
Even though his stint at the club last year was only short, Drew did more than enough to impress Stuart Malcolm, with the former Camelon Juniors player offered a deal to join Berwick permanently next season. Speaking about his new signing, the manager said, ‘This is another good signing for us. We saw last season the quality that Drew brings to games and within training, where Drew really grew into the training sessions and never looked out of place. He’s stepping up a few divisions to play for us, but we think that Drew is really going to push on. We’re really looking forward to working with him – he is creative, he can score goals, he can play in a more defensive role, and he gives us another string to our bow in attack. He is a great kid and will add lots of quality to our squad.’
Drew himself can’t wait to get started. He said, ‘I am so excited to sign for Berwick. I had that excitement last season before my first game on loan. It didn’t feel real at the time, but that first game was a great experience. Then in my second game, I got to play against East Stirling in Falkirk, my hometown, and set up one of the goals – which was a great feeling. It was a brilliant experience to play at that stadium, and my family were all there so it was a pretty proud moment.’
Cummings went on to talk about his new Berwick teammates, adding, ‘They are a great group of lads. They are so welcoming, and I get along with them all. They have been brilliant with me since my first training session. My aspiration is to break through into the starting XI. It’s going to be hard, and I’ll need to prove myself, but my aim is to be a regular starter in the team by the end of the season.’
Drew is also in a special position, being based locally to Berwick and moving from Tweedmouth Rangers. He reflected on this further, saying, ‘Signing for Berwick has been a long time coming, not just for me, but for the club. Although I’m not originally from Berwick, I have been at Tweedmouth for 3 years, and I now live and work in Berwick and have many friends here. I love the town and I’m just really proud to be able to represent the club.
‘The fans know that this is a big season ahead, and I am sure they’ll get behind the lads. We have a great support here at Shielfield and I’ll give everything for the fans every time I pull the shirt on. I am looking forward to seeing everyone on 1 July (when Berwick face Haddington Athletic) and am even more excited to see what we can achieve as a group!
