Cummings joins Coldstream

Midfielder Drew Cummings has joined East of Scotland Division 2 side Coldstream for an undisclosed fee, after indicating he no longer wished to play for Berwick Rangers.

Cummings featured 22 times for the ‘Gers this season, but had not played for the club since November after asking for some time away from the game. The club supported Drew’s wishes, with our pastoral network led by the management team and club chaplain Jamie Hughes on hand to help. We were hoping that after a break, Drew would be able to return to action for the ‘Gers for the remainder of the contract, which he had extended for a second season in August.

However, in recent weeks Drew made it clear that he wished to be transferred to a club which trained more locally. We looked into a range of options to move forward positively, including working to keep Drew at Berwick and exploring a possible loan move rather than a permanent transfer. Nevertheless, Drew still sought a permanent transfer from the club. Given the clear quality and potential that Drew has demonstrated with Berwick this season, we then tried to move him to a club where he would continue to play at as high a level as possible. Drew, though, was set on a move to Coldstream, three tiers below the Lowland League, and we were able to negotiate a fee with the Borders club which has allowed this to happen.

The funds received for Drew’s transfer will be reinvested in the playing squad, allowing manager Thomas Scobbie to further strengthen the side for next season. Thomas Kay, Lewis Barr, Grant Nelson, Callum Mackay, Alex Harris, Kane O’Connor, Liam Buchanan and Arran Laidlaw have already committed to next season, and we continue to work hard to add more names to that list.
