Cummings commits to sophomore season
Impressive young midfielder Drew Cummings has put pen to paper on a contract extension which will see him stay at Berwick Rangers for the 2024/25 season.
The 20-year-old joined the Wee ‘Gers on a permanent basis in the summer, having initially impressed in a loan spell in January while still at East of Scotland Division Two side – and our near neighbours – Tweedmouth Rangers. This season, Drew has featured in five of Berwick’s six league games – including starts against Caledonian Braves, Cumbernauld Colts, East Stirlingshire and Celtic B. His positivity and energy have made the Berwick-based central midfielder stand out in every game he has played.
In cementing his place at Berwick Rangers for another year, Drew continues his development within the local football set-up in the town. Cummings had very little experience of senior football while at his first club Camelon Juniors, but it was at Tweedmouth Rangers where he really made his mark. Through three years of hard work at Tweedmouth, supported by local coaches and team-mates, Cummings successfully caught the eye of the Berwick management team of Stuart Malcolm, Dean Shanks and Thomas Scobbie.
With the creation of Berwick Rangers Community Academy, and attempts by the club to forge stronger links with other local football clubs at a range of levels, it is hoped that Drew Cummings will be the first of many talented locally-based male players to have the opportunity to play for Berwick Rangers. Meanwhile, our women’s team is almost exclusively made up of local talent, and the club will continue to foster the pathway for girls as well as boys into the ranks of senior football.
Manager Stuart Malcolm was delighted that Drew has signed up for another season, commenting, ‘We are ecstatic that Drew has extended his contract here at Berwick. I think everyone has seen how quickly Drew has stepped up to the level required, and we feel he will continue to develop. If he believes in himself and applies himself, Drew can continue to progress up the footballing levels – hopefully with us. We see huge amounts of potential and natural ability in Drew.’
Reflecting on Drew as a player, Stuart went on to say, ‘Right from when we first saw Drew as a loan player, myself, Dean and Thomas were incredibly impressed with him. He is very comfortable on the ball, very composed, and has the energy to move around the pitch. He reads the game very well, and while he has clear attacking prowess, he’s also very capable of playing in a more defensive role. We are really pleased that he was brought to our attention last season, and he has blown us away with his ability.’
Cummings will look to play his part in stretching Berwick’s winning run to three matches on the road against Edinburgh University tonight (Tuesday 22nd August), in a match that kicks off at 7.45pm. After cup duties away to Crossgates Primrose this Saturday, Drew and the rest of the Berwick Rangers squad return to Shielfield Park to face old rivals Cowdenbeath on Saturday 2nd September. We hope to see you there!
