Coughlin Recruits Thomson
‘Gers boss John Coughlin has moved to sign up Musselburgh Athletic forward Steven Thomson as he begins to put the final touches to his squad for the 2016-2017 season.
The club website revealed last week that manager Coughlin was looking to make three more additions to the squad, and Thomson has become the first of the potential trio to sign.
A deep-lying forward, Thomson possesses an impressive goal record from his time with Athletic, and can also be deployed as an attack-minded midfielder.
The 29 year-old joined Musselburgh from Bonnyrigg Rose back in 2013, and his time with the ‘Gers will be his first experience of senior football.
He will be hoping to follow in the footsteps of his former ‘Mussy’ teammate Brian Martin, who joined the ‘Gers in January of this year, and went on to have an incredible second half of the season in League Two despite never having played in the senior leagues before.
Steven will also link up with another former teammate in the form of Jordyn Sheerin. Their strike partnership fired Musselburgh to the Junior Cup final back in 2015, with Steven netting 26 times in the 14/15 campaign.
Sheerin told the East Lothian Courier: “There was competition between us – a friendly rivalry throughout the season. I managed to scored a few more in the end, but hopefully we can go on and do the same together this year.”
A deal had been agreed with Thomson some time ago, however his contract had only expired at midnight. The club hope to be in a position announce two loan signings in the coming days.
The club would like to welcome Steven to Shielfield and look forward to seeing him in action. An interview with Steven’s thoughts on joining the club will be online at some point next week.
