Coaching Team Update

The club can confirm that Assistant Manager Dean Shanks, goalkeeping coach Alex Stewart, and coach Scott ‘Murf’ McKenzie have left Berwick Rangers, and depart with the club’s sincere thanks and best wishes for the future.

Dean Shanks served as Assistant Manager from June 2021 – sitting in the dugout in 154 competitive Berwick Rangers matches. With Stuart Malcolm as manager, Dean played a crucial role as the club enjoyed its highest points tally and highest number of goals in any season since 2007. More recently, Dean continued to assist Thomas Scobbie when he took on the manager’s role in October 2023. Dean’s passion for Berwick Rangers was genuine and infectious, and the club have greatly benefited from his immense skills on the training pitch, in the dugout, and in many other facets of operations. He has given his all for Berwick Rangers and our supporters, and will certainly be missed around Shielfield. Although the club offered Dean the chance to stay on, he has decided that now is the time to move on. He leaves with our immense thanks.

Joining us last season, Alex Stewart has brought skill, experience and enthusiasm to his role as goalkeeping coach. Both Calum Antell and Thomas Kay have greatly benefited from the coaching and advice of ‘Eck’, and Alex always spoke about how much he enjoyed working with our two very talented ‘keepers. We thank Alex for all his work, and wish him the best going forward.

Scott ‘Murf’ McKenzie returned for a second spell at the club in July 2024, and was a much valued source of support for Thomas and Dean this season. Murf says he has loved both of his stints at Shielfield, and wanted to thank all of the fans who welcomed him back and were so good to him. All at the club would like to thank Murf for his commitment and hard work.

Following the departure of Dean, Alex and Murf, the club will shortly announce the rest of the coaching team who will be coming in to assist Kevin Haynes and player/coach Liam Buchanan.
