Scott completes 110 year family journey back to Berwick Rangers

Berwick Rangers are delighted to announce the signing of 16 year old prospect Cameron Scott, over a century after his great-great-grandfather played for the club.

Cameron comes to Shielfield Park on an 18-month deal from amateur side Cambusbarron Rovers of the Caledonian Premier Division. Prior to that, he was with Alloa Athletic up to Under 16 level, but Cameron felt that he wanted to make the step up to adult football and so moved across to the men’s amateur leagues. It was not long before Cameron had caught the eye of a number of SPFL clubs, but he has decided to commit his future to the ‘Gers, and has trained with the squad in recent weeks.

Incredibly, Cameron is not the first member of his family to play for Berwick Rangers. His great-great-grandfather Alex Weatherburn featured for the club in the 1909/10, 1910/11, 1914/15 and 1923/24 seasons. Weatherburn played 35 times for Berwick, and scored 8 goals – playing most of his matches in a time that predates the building of our current Shielfield Park ground by over 40 years. Cameron’s grandfather and great-grandfather were both also freemen of Berwick upon Tweed. Our thanks to Alan Bell of ‘An International Every Week: A History and Journal of Berwick Rangers Football Club’ for the historic details.

A lot has changed in both football and the world since Cameron’s ancestor took to the pitch in the Edwardian era, but Cameron is eager to write his own chapter in both his family’s and the club’s history. Speaking as he watched his new teammates at MKM Shielfield Park on Saturday, the youngster said, ‘It feels absolutely great to sign for Berwick. I understand the history of the club and how big a club this is, and I’m excited for my future here.’ Cameron will also need to balance his football with his studies, as he is still at school studying for his Higher exams in May.

‘Gers manager Thomas Scobbie was equally happy to secure Cameron’s signature. The boss said, ‘I am very pleased to bring Cameron in. He’s really impressed us in training, both with his quality and his attitude. We’re really looking forward to developing him and nurturing him across this season and next.’

Cameron will be available for selection for Berwick’s next game, at home to Heart of Midlothian B on Wednesday night. This game is a 7.45pm kick off, with both the Match Ball and Man of the Match sponsorship packages still available to purchase from the club shop.
