Bloomfield joins ‘Gers Development Squad
The Development Squad have secured their first new signing of the summer as 18-year-old attacker Rhys Bloomfield joins the club from Berwick Colts.
The youngster, who lives in the town, played for Berwick Juniors growing up before joining Spittal Rovers. The following season Bloomfield joined Berwick Colts, where he earned promotion, lifted two cups and collected several end of season awards. Bloomfield is the latest young player from the local area to earn a place with the Under 20s, following Buster Briggs, Gary Windram and Evan Smith to Shielfield Park.
Bloomfield is delighted to make the step up to Development Squad, and is looking forward to improving as a player over the next 12 months: “I can’t wait to start my next season with the Berwick Under 20s development squad. I think it will give me a good opportunity to become a better footballer and to develop my game.”
Head of Youth at the club, Derek McKenzie, admitted that the club has had their eye on the player for a while: “Rhys is an exciting player who has been on our radar for the past year or so. He’s developed really well at Berwick Colts and now I’m hopeful he will push on and cement his place in the Development team. His enthusiasm in our talks has been great and I look forward to working with him.”
Rhys will join up with his teammates tomorrow night as pre-season training begins for the squad.
