Berwick v Tranent Match Report 25-26

Berwick endured another 0-0 draw after a dull stalemate with Tranent at Shielfield Park.

The best chance of the game fell to Kieran Moyles early in the second half as he connected with Michael Barfoot’s cross, but his header went just over the bar.

The visitors started the game the better as they looked to stamp an early mark. Some neat play created space for Greig Young who found Harry Girdwood just outside the box. He laid the ball off to Greig Spence whose shot flew over the bar.

A few minutes later and Tranent created another chance. Conor Doan found himself all alone in the middle of the park. He decided to take a shot from distance that forced Liam Campbell to tip the ball wide.

The resulting corner by Doan was a clever one as it was driven low to Josh Grigor on the edge of the box. He got a good connection on the shot that was well saved by Campbell again.

Berwick struggled to create any chances in the game as Tranent’s strong defensive form this season was on show once again. The Gers’ best chance came just before the half-hour mark. Harry Wright did well to hold onto the ball as his forward run got him to the edge of the box. His attempted cross made its way to Caelan McCrone on the right who went for a shot, but it was well blocked by Young. Little goalmouth action followed as a drab first half ended goalless.

The Dream Team began the second half flying as Wright made a run towards goal before slipping in Kyle Somers. His shot was destined for the goal but was deflected just wide.

Not long after and Danny Handling received the ball on the edge of the box. He struck the ball with power that forced Kelly Mason to tip the ball over the bar.

Tranent responded with a chance of their own. Dean Brett’s cross was slightly too high for Young as his header looped over the bar.

The chances began to flow after a scrappy first half to put it kindly. McCrone whipped a terrific cross in from deep on the right that picked out Moyles inside the box. The defender’s header went just over in what was the best chance of the game so far.

The visitors’ main threat seemed to be coming from crosses. Sam Jones’ cross from the right was a terrific one that caused chaos amongst the Berwick backline. Campbell failed to punch the ball clear as Nick Aitchison capitalised, but his header went inches over the bar.

As the game entered the closing stages, it looked like one goal would be enough to win. Just over five minutes from time, Scott Gray’s cross was sent to the back post where Guy McGarry was waiting. However, he executed a poor header that didn’t trouble Campbell’s goal.

Berwick had one last chance to snatch the win in stoppage time. McCrone’s cross was met by an audacious overhead kick by Somers in which he could only connect with his arm. The ball fell to Isaac Deh who found the bottom left corner with his shot, but a foul had already been given for Somers’ handball to prevent any jubilant scenes.

The game ended 0-0 which gives Berwick back-to-back goalless scorelines in the last two games. The Gers remain 10th in the table, whereas Tranent still sit 4th with their title challenge all but over. Berwick’s next game is this Saturday away to Gretna 2008 before their final game of the season on April 18th against Bo’ness United at Shielfield Park.
