Antell is a Berwicker
Berwick Rangers are delighted to confirm the addition of 29 year-old Calum Antell, who will join the club from Championship side Arbroath this summer. Calum joins on an two-year deal.
Calum brings with him a wealth of experience having racked up some 187 appearances across various divisions within the SPFL. In addition to Arbroath, he has also spent time in the senior system with East Stirlingshire, East Fife, Queen of the South, Brechin City and Edinburgh City.
The goalkeeper originally moved to Scotland to join Hibernian on a full-time basis, having spent time in the youth systems of both Cardiff City and Swindon Town. Between 2014 and 2016, he also enjoyed a 70 game spell with Nairn County before returning to the senior ranks.
And Welshman Antell joins the ‘Gers from Dick Campbell’s Arbroath, where he was unbeaten six appearances last season. Prior to joining the Smokies for their impressive 21/22 Championship campaign, he was first-choice at Edinburgh City for around five years.
After speaking to manager Stuart Malcolm, the former Wales under 19 international rejected offers from elsewhere within the senior leagues as well as at rival Lowland League clubs, with the project at Berwick and prospect of making the #1 jersey his own clearly proving attractive as he enters the prime of his career.
Manager Stuart Malcolm said: “Calum is a massive signing for Berwick Rangers. He’s coming in in a key position for the club, with a level of experience and know-how that can help propel us forward.
“He’s a goalkeeper who’ll make saves at vital times, who has very good all-round attributes, and who has great experience. He’s finished 2nd in League Two four times with Edinburgh City, and arrives knowing where trying to get to and what we’re trying to achieve. He’ll marshall our back four well, communicating with them throughout a game to nullify opposition threats.
“We’re absolutely delighted to have him on board for the next couple of years and we’re looking forward to having him join us this pre-season with the rest of the boys ahead of an exciting new campaign.”
The club would like to wish Calum a very warm welcome to Shielfield Park and look forward to welcoming him this summer.
