Steven Thomson pens a new deal

Berwick Rangers can today confirm that Steven Thomson has extended his stay with the club. The player originally signed for the club in July 2016, however, with his contract due to expire, boss John Coughlin has moved quickly to re-sign the midfielder.

Thomson impressed in his first season at senior level

Thomson was a star man for the club over the course of the last campaign. The 32 year old made 40 appearances in all competitions, scoring 13 goals and ending the season as the club’s top scorer.

Signing for the club on another one year deal, he will be hoping to continue his fine run of form next season. Thomson arrived at Shielfield Park with an impressive goal-scoring record from his time with his previous club Musselburgh Athletic, where his versatility often saw him deployed in a more advanced role than that he has been used in during his time at Berwick.

The midfielder proved over the last campaign how important he is to side, picking up a number of end of season awards, being named Player of the Season by both fans and his own teammates.

The club is hoping to improve on last season’s disappointing campaign, which saw them move onto 40 points and an 8th placed finish on the final day of the season. A standout performer last season, hopes of such improvement will undoubtedly be bolstered by the news that that Steven will be sticking around for a second season in Black and Gold.

Steven joins Pat Scullion, Gary Phillips and Greg Rutherford in penning new terms. The quartet will be joined by Sean Brennan, Kevin McKinlay, Robert Wilson, Jonny Fairbairn, Steven Notman, Michael McKenna and Darren Lavery who all penned two-year deals last summer.

Coughlin has also invited youngster Callum Helm to take part in pre-season with the club. Helm has been a part of the youth system for a number of years, however the player has had two serious injuries which had ruled him out of the last two campaigns.

Elsewhere, the manager mentioned that though he is making progress in the transfer market, movement has been slow as a result of many of his targets on holiday. The manager hopes to make some positive strides upon their return.

The club looks forward to welcoming Steven back to Sheffield Park for the new campaign, and look forward to more impressive displays from the player.
