Looking back: Gray, Gold, Miller & Maxwell
With the confirmation that manager Colin Cameron has opted to decide against offering new deals to Ross Gray, Ben Miller, Scott Maxwell and David Gold, Berwick Rangers Official Website takes a look back at their Berwick careers.
Ross Gray
At the age of just 22, Gray has been a Berwick player no less than four occasions, having joined previously from his former club Livingston in separate loan deals while Berwick were under the management of Jimmy Crease and later Ian Little. Ross would sign for the club on a permanent basis in May 2013 after becoming a fan-favourite with his old fashioned tricky wing play.
During his time with the club, Ross would play a total of 102 times scoring on nine occasions. It is testament to the part he’d play in recent Berwick sides that 72% of his appearances would be from the start. Unfortunately for Ross, an injury sustained in a pre-season tie with Dunfermline in July 2015 appeared difficult to fully recover from, and having to settle more of a squad role this season, playing 32 times but only starting in 15.
David Gold
Gold meanwhile joined the club in the summer of 2014 from Hibernian, after picking up senior experience during loan spells with Cowdenbeath and Dumbarton.
Although Gold struggled to ever nail down a place in the starting eleven, he’d impress fans with his energy on the pitch. Scoring a respectable 5 goals in 38 appearances – 17 of which came from the bench, David’s most memorable moments often came late in games, including a last gasp winner against East Fife in a 3-2 victory at New Bayview.
Ben Miller
Ben Miller meanwhile leaves the club after spending a wealth of time with the club as a player who’d rise up the ranks. A part of Berwick’s Under 17’s squad at one point, Ben rapidly progressed through the ranks to Under 19s, reserve and eventually first team level.
First given his chance by Ian Little in 2013, Miller’s first and only real sustained spell in the first team came under the stewardship of Colin Cameron towards the latter end of the same campaign. However, Miller would struggle to regain his place in the side this season despite impressing whilst out on loan to Arniston Rangers to pick up game time, and moves on having donned the black and gold 28 times, 22 of which came from the bench.
Scott Maxwell
Scott Maxwell is another of Cameron’s 2014 summer signings who leaves the club after a season. The left footer joined from East Stirlingshire and was a welcomed addition to the squad by fans who had often been impressed by his trickery when playing against the ‘Gers.
However Maxwell found it somewhat difficult to adapt to Shielfield and was again another who struggled to make a first team place his own in the early stages of the season, with the departed Dean Hoskins, the departing Ross Gray and the then-arriving Ross Drummond often chosen ahead of him.
Nevertheless, Maxwell still managed to start 23 games during the campaign, owing largely due to a sustained period in the team towards the latter end of the season in which he’d impress from both left back and left midfield. Maxwell’s finest moment in a Berwick shirt came in a Petrofac Cup tie in Greenock when he’d cannon in a strike off the bar from around 20 yards early on, though Berwick would go on to lose 5-2 to Morton.
