Trio commit to ‘Gers

We are delighted to announce that Callum Mackay, Liam Gregory and Thomas Kay will all be returning to Berwick Rangers for the 2026/7 season.

As announced on social media recently, defender Callum Mackay has extended his stay at the club. He has been at MKM Shielfield Park since 2023, and recently passed the 50 appearance mark in black and gold. After a breakthrough first season in senior football in 2023/4, Callum suffered a serious injury which kept him out from April 2024 to September 2025. Callum returned to fitness last season, making 15 appearances, and was a key part of the ‘Gers side that only lost 2 of their final 10 games at the close of the Park’s Motor Group Lowland League season.

‘Gers manager Kevin Haynes is thrilled to have Callum back, saying ‘After recovering from his long injury, Callum has done really well. He had to be patient during the season, as we nursed him back from injury. He picked up a few niggles here and there – which was to be expected – but fortunately he eventually got the run of games he needed. I think he came through the last 10 games, started every game and never looked out of place. He demonstrated the football player that he is, the intelligence that he has for the game, and the aggression that he possesses. I’m delighted that he’s with us for the forthcoming season.’

Liam Gregory will also be returning to Shielfield for 2026/7, and will be hoping for much better fortune after a season marred by two serious injuries. The former Dunbar United winger could only make 7 appearances for the ‘Gers last season, but showed his pace, directness and threat in those matches – most memorably playing a part in a fantastic team goal against East Stirlingshire within a minute of making his Berwick competitive debut!

On Liam, Kevin Haynes said, ‘It’s great to have Liam signed up for another season, as he demonstrated what he’s capable of in the performances that he put in towards the tail end of last season. This was all after a long spell on the sidelines – getting injured in preseason, making a comeback and picking up a second injury. So to get him on the pitch towards the end was great, and Liam came back quicker from that second injury than we’d have normally thought. Hopefully we can see the best of Liam next season and he can build on the decent performances he’s had so far.’

The third player to be returning next season is goalkeeper Thomas Kay, who has been at the club since 2021 – a club veteran despite only being 21! In a similar vein to Callum and Liam, Thomas’ 2025/6 campaign was curtailed by injury, which meant he was not able to get as much match experience from his loan deals at Edinburgh University and Edinburgh South as he would have wanted. In fact, Thomas’ spell at Edinburgh South ended with an injury on debut, which brought a premature and frustrating end to the young goalkeeper’s season. Thomas returns to Berwick as part of a strong goalkeeping group, and will once again be likely to spend some of the 2026/7 season on loan to continue his development.

Berwick goalkeeping coach Ross Merrilees said he was, ‘delighted to be working with Tam again for another season with a view of preparing him for some prolonged game time out on loan. He was unlucky with a couple of injuries last season so the aim will be to get him back to match fitness as soon as possible so he can develop his game further and get those vital game minutes under his belt this season.’

These three players are added to a squad which already has a string core of returning players. Already confirmed as signed for next season are: Calum Antell, Thomas Kay, Jamie Pyper, Callum Mackay, Mark McConnell, Isaac Deh, Struan Mair, Kyle Somers, Ben McCrystal, Alex Harris, Liam Gregory, Michael Barfoot, Michael Mbewe, Danny Handling and Greg Binnie.
