Rodger is a Ranger!

Experienced left-sided defender Gareth Rodger has become the latest addition to Thomas Scobbie’s Berwick playing squad, and is set to become a fans’ favourite, according to his new manager.

‘I am really pleased that Gareth has agreed to join us for the upcoming campaign’, said Scobbie. Rodger’s career record was also highlighted by Scobbie – the 30 year-old began in senior football at St Johnstone, and has also featured for the likes of Ballymena United, Forfar Athletic, Montrose and Edinburgh City.

Rodger may be best known to Berwick fans more recently due to his time at Gala Fairydean Rovers, whom he joined from Stirling Albion. In a four and a half year stint at Netherdale, Rodger earned the captain’s armband and led the team to an East of Scotland Qualifying Cup win.

Looking at what his new defender will bring to the team, Scobbie added, ‘He is an aggressive defender who is very good at winning the ball in the air in both boxes.’ Rodger has scored goals at every level at which he has played, and is also an impressive technical footballer according to the gaffer. ‘Gareth is comfortable stepping out with the ball and playing from the back, which is something that I want my defenders to be able to do. He will add a lot to the defensive side of our game, and I’m sure the fans will enjoy seeing Gareth in the black and gold!’

Gareth Rodger is in line to make his Berwick Rangers debut in this Saturday’s Northumberland derby against Morpeth Town – the ‘Gers’ final preseason friendly. Kick off is at 3pm at MKM Shielfield Park, and post-match entertainment will be provided by singer Laura Cairns, who will perform in the JB Lounge from 6pm.
