Interview & Podcast: Kevin Waugh
A few weeks ago, Berwick Rangers FC announced that six players – Kevin Waugh, Euan Smith, Ali Forster, Dan Purves, Sam Daniel and Jack Wright – would all be returning for the 2020/21 season.
Over the past few days, Adam Hunter – host of the Let It BRFC podcast – has caught up with all of the re-signed players to get their thoughts on the season just finished, why they signed up with the ‘Gers again and their hopes for the upcoming campaign.
First up to the mic was former Hibs youth Kevin Waugh, who admitted that he had been the subject of interest from other clubs in recent weeks but was in little doubt about his desire to remain at Shielfield Park.
“There was interest elsewhere but I wasn’t really interested,” said the 21-year-old. “I’ve really enjoyed this year despite the levels that we’ve been at and it tells me that if we can raise our standards, it’s going to be an even better place to play.
“So for me, another team in the Lowland League coming in for me didn’t interest me to be perfectly honest. I don’t want to be anywhere else right now.”
Waugh shared fans’ and the management team’s well-documented frustrations at the club’s final position in the Lowland League table and believes that the ‘Gers should be targeting – at the very minimum – a top six finish next season.
“It was disappointing in terms of performances and where we are in the league and we should’ve done better. We took care of the teams that have been below us but didn’t beat enough of the teams around and above us.
“We need to improve on points, our position in the table and picking up more wins against teams people maybe wouldn’t expect us to beat because there’s not a bigger club than Berwick Rangers in the Lowland League.
“There’s no reason why we should feel inferior to anybody – regardless of the money being spent. We have to be aiming for minimum of top six and if you start well in this league and get a bit of momentum going, anything can happen.”
