With his early youth career spent at Hibernian, Smith moved to St Johnstone in 2012, where he remained for three seasons. During that time, he didn’t make a first team appearance for the Saints but spent time on loan at Arbroath in League One in the 2012/13 season and Clyde in League Two in 2014/15.

Following the expiration of his contract at St Johnstone, Smith joined Brechin City and he spent four seasons at the Angus club – three of which were in League One and one, the 2017/18 season, in the Championship.

The central midfielder amassed 112 appearances in all competitions in his time at Glebe Park so it was very much a coup for the ‘Gers to sign him for the start of their inaugural Lowland League campaign in 2019/20 and a solid debut season saw him become one of the first players to sign on again for 2020/21.
